Stockholm is a unique city praised as one of the most beautiful capital cities in the world. Sightseeing is easy and rewarding. Everywhere you go you will find beautiful building and sights.
Stockholm city is full of cultural and exciting buildings. The Old Town centre, "Gamla Stan" is still very much intact from the old days with narrow alleys, old buildings and typical squares. Many other major cities in Europe were ruined during World War II but Stockholm escaped that fate, being a neutral country. For visitors in Stockholm it is almost mandatory to spend some time in "Gamla Stan".
Walking is the preferred way to get around and wherever you go you will find water. The City of Stockholm is situated on fourteen islands and on the banks to the archipelago where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. The city centre is virtually situated on the water.
The city is amazingly clean with fresh unpolluted air and you can actually eat the fish you catch in the city centre water. The city is also a safe city with very little crime.
The Royal Palace is one of the main attractions in "Gamla Stan". It is used as a place of work for the Royal Family at the same time as it is open and accessible to the general public. The King opens another room to the public almost every year, making it unique among palaces. The Royal Palace is built at the same location as the old palace "Tre Kronor", which was destroyed by fire in 1697. Designed by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the younger the "new palace" is one the most remarkable Baroque buildings of northern Europe. It was completed in 1754 and was first occupied by King Adolf Fredrik and his wife Lovisa Ulrika. The palace was furnished in a style that was the precursor of the Gustavian style for which Sweden is today famous.
The palace is still used by the Royal Family as a place of work but the King and Queen now resides in the palace at Drottningholm. The State Apartments, including the Hall of State, the Apartments of the Chivalry Offices, The Treasury and Gustav III´s Museum of Antiquities, are all open to visitors.
Hotels
It is possible to stay at hotels within or close to "Gamla Stan". If you choose to stay at First Hotel Reisen you will be living very close to the Royal Palace and have a wonderful panoramic view of the central waterfront of Stockholm. First Hotel Reisen is made out of several old buildings. In the 18th century, Fredrik Reiss opened a coffee house for ships docking at the outlet of Stockholm. Today's relaxation section is situated in the hotel's spectacular 17th-century vaulted cellar and is quite small but exquisite. The rooms are picturesque and the suites are very comfortable with old fashion design and lots of atmosphere.
Reisen's bar and dining overlooking Strömmen, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, serves excellent seasonal Swedish contemporary specialties as well as French inspired bistro food. The view, the food and the personal attention make this a favourite spot for both international guests and locals.
Best hotel room view of the Royal Palace is of course from Grand Hôtel, the premiere hotel in Stockholm. Grand Hôtel is a classic landmark in the centre of Stockholm. The location is perfect and the spectacular view over the harbour, Old Town and Royal Palace is much appreciated, both by international and Swedish guests.
The hotel has an exquisite location with rooms and suites that are unique and stunning. Grand Hôtel opened for the first time in 1874 and has a long and fascinating history. The interior has been carefully maintained during the years and has an aura of outstanding quality and classic elegance. After big expansion in 2006 and a major refurbishment in 2011 the hotel now has 345 rooms. 37 of the rooms are suites and the largest, Princess Lilians Suite, is 330 square meters with an adorable view over Stockholm.
Grand Hôtel Meetings has a range of facilities that are suitable for major conferences or receptions as well as small meetings. Modern technology, exceptional food and drinks coupled with a unique environment create an experience that is hard to beat.
Grand Hôtel has 18 conference and meeting rooms to suit anything from two to 650 participants, ranging from the smaller rooms in Bolinderska Palatset to the magnificent Vinterträdgården and Spegelsalen.
Grand Hôtel is also the preferred hotel for many of the Nobel Prize winners during the annual award ceremony that take place in Stockholm on December 10th each year.
At Grand Hôtel you will also find the spectacular Cadier Bar, named after Régis Cadier, the French chef and the founder of the hotel. It is as very popular gathering spot for an after work drink, informal meetings and nights out on the town. The Veranda is the hotel restaurant with the best view in Stockholm. If you're going to indulge in a classic Swedish smörgåsbord, this is the place to go.
Mathias Dahlgren is one of the most celebrated chefs in Sweden with a win in the chef world championship, Bocuse d'Or, in 1997. He opened a restaurant in his own name at Grand Hôtel in 2007 and won a star in Guide Michelin 2008. This was upgraded to 2 stars in 2009 and his second restaurant, Matbaren, earned another star in Guide Michelin.
The Berns Hotel is an attention-seeker, a cultural epicentre and a fantastic local hotspot.
Berns has been a Stockholm landmark since 1863 and is situated in the very heart of the city. Berns features an elegant boutique hotel as well as conference and banqueting facilities and a vibrant Asian restaurant. There is also a summer terrace, popular bars, the nightclub/Gallery 2.35:1, and one of the best concert venues in town. All this under one roof in a spectacular design package!
Critically acclaimed Berns Bistro & Bar in Berzelii Park serves rustic French fare and offers a lovely patio during the summer months. The China Theatre showcases major musical performances and international stand-up comedians. In cooperation with the China Theatre they offer menu-, hotel- and musical packages during the evenings as well as exceptional conference facilities during the days.
During 2011 the design team from Perfect Design has transformed 17 rooms to something spectacular, unique and interesting.
Berns Hotel is part of Stureplansgruppen with a number of restaurants and clubs in their portfolio of entertainment venues, such as the restaurants Bistro Berns, Berns Asia and Bistro Le Bon and quality clubs such as Spy Bar, Ambassadeur, Le Bon Palais, Magenta, Sturecompagniet and the White Room.
We have produced over 350 Hilton brand properties with our 360-images during the years and Hilton Slussen was one of the first we produced for Hilton back in 2005. We also actually did produce this property in 2002 for the 360CityGuide project…
Hilton Slussen is a unique property with a fabulous location. The view over Gamla Stan and the water, Riddarfjärden, is splendid.
The unique design is typical Nordic but with Italian influences. The rooms have wooden panels on the wall and there is plenty of white Carerra marble in the bathrooms. The hotel has recently been refurbished with a beautiful result.
Famous Swedish architect Gert Wingårdh was involved with the original design when the hotel was built 20 years ago. The recent refurbishment has been done together with architects from DOOS who have been involved with rooms and the executive lounge. Much influence is on Italian design with furniture from Taccini but the rooms also have designer items from Thomas Bentzen, Tom Dixo. Much of the original ideas from Gert Wingårdh are still there such as the wooden panels and marble bathrooms.
Hilton Slussen is a very venue for meetings and conventions with 17 meeting rooms and a unique auditorium with 285 seats in a theatre style fixed seating.
Eken Bar & Matsal is high quality restaurant and is very popular among guests and locals.
Nordic Hotels is a hotel with focus on great design and are elected members of Design Hotels. The hotel group actually has 2 hotels in Stockholm, the Nordic Sea Hotel and the Nordic Light Hotel, located on the opposite side of a newly constructed square in the absolute centre of the city. It's only a few hundred meters away from the Central Train Station and the Arlanda Express. It will take you to Stockholm's International Airport Arlanda in 20 minutes while a taxi usually takes at least twice that time. Nordic Sea has 367 hotel rooms and is designed with a maritime theme. The seas, coasts and shipyards have all lent inspiration to the interiors.
The Icebar at Nordic Sea Hotel is quite unique and well worth a visit. It opened June 1st 2002 in cooperation with The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi and is the world's first permanent ice bar. The Absolut Icebar in Jukkasjärvi is not permanent as it melts down each year together with the entire Icehotel but the Icebar at Nordic Sea is permanent and the interior is kept at below zero temperature -5°C all year round. All of the interior fittings, including the glasses, are made of pure, clear ice from the Torne River in northern Sweden.
The bar has capacity for 30 persons and you need special protecting clothing, available at the entrance, making you and everyone else look like someone from out of space. It looks very funny and adds to the feeling of an extraordinary experience. The protecting clothing is not only to protect you from the cold temperature; it's also protecting the Icebar from the body heat generated from the visitors. The choice of light sources is also something to consider in this very special environment. To reduce heat as much as possible fiber optic light is used.
The idea of the Icebar grew in the form of the cooperation between Ejnar Söder, President Nordic Hotels and Yngve Bergqvist, the President, founder and entrepreneur behind the Icehotel. It is not by chance that Nordic Hotels shows an interest in ice. The company works with a concept in which everything is designed with the purpose of providing their guests with an out-of-the-ordinary experience.
Staying at Nordic Light Hotel, the smaller of the two hotels with 175 rooms, you will get an exceptional visual experience. The design is contemporary and every part of the hotel has a light theme with special light engineering. Every room is like an art design installation with light as a common theme. The lobby features a unique interactive work of art that emits sounds and lightning effects when it senses the presence of a guest. Suggestive light patterns are projected onto the walls, recreating the ever-changing patterns of the Nordic light.
Both hotels offer modern meeting facilities for a total of 520 persons in 15 meeting rooms suitable for conferences, customer gatherings, incentives or board meetings.
Next to the Central Train Station you will find one of the 5 Radisson Blu hotels in Stockholm, the Radisson Blu Royal Viking Hotel. All Radisson Blu hotels share the same values as high standard hotels but have their own individual style and atmosphere. Royal Viking is a modern hotel with a strong focus on modern design and large open spaces. The suites are divided into different themes and the hotel is well suited for conferences and meetings.
Radisson Blu Strand Hotel is beautifully situated at the Nybroviken harbour close to the Royal Theatre Dramaten. The Radisson Blu Strand Hotel is quite different from its sister hotel Royal Viking. It's an old and prestigious building at a unique location. The Radisson Blu Strand Hotel is a perfect blend of the old and cosy with a high class atmosphere as well as modern design. Some of the suites are quite extraordinary, such as the Tower Suite in 2 levels with narrow stairs and a terrace with a panoramic Stockholm view to die for. The Tower suite is probably not suitable for a disabled person or a family with small kids, as there is no elevator to the top floor tower, but perfect for the businessman who would like to impress an important customer with a meeting in the suite.
The Radisson Blu Strand Hotel is not a conference hotel like several of its sister hotels but a few meeting rooms are available.
Other hotels with a perfect Stockholm water location is the Hotel Diplomat and Hotel Esplanade, both located on the Stockholm prime location address Strandvägen. Both hotels are located in similar building so typical for Stockholm architecture taking full benefit of the exquisite location.
Hotel Rival opened up in 2003, at Maria Square and was Sweden's first boutique hotel. The property used to be a cinema theatre and was carefully renovated to a splendid hotel. It is a small privately owned hotel with 99 rooms, a bistro with a bar, a cocktail bar in art deco style, a café and a lounge with seating for 700 people. It is owned by one of the internationally most well known Swedes, Benny Andersson, member of the famous ABBA group.
One of the more recent additions to the Stockholm hotel scene is the Scandic Grand Station Hotel. The hotel opened up in 2010 at a classic location in a beautiful 130 years old building. With 391 rooms is situated in central Stockholm close to Stockholm's Central Station and the Arlanda Express.
Hotel Stureplan opened up in 2009 and is a small, intimate hotel located in an elegant 19th century building in the heart of Stockholm. It has 101 rooms in a variety of styles. The location is superb on Birger Jarlsgatan, close to Stockholm nightlife and shopping.
Nobis Hotel is located in two historic late 19th-century buildings on the Norrmalmstorg square. The hotel is an independent 201-room hotel in an environment of casual elegance and has been designed by world renowned Swedish star architect studio Claesson Koivisto Rune (CKR) with a superb result. The trio started their architect and design office in 1995 and has had many highly successful architectural and design projects, in Sweden and abroad. The project with Nobis was completed in December 2010 with a grand opening.
The Nobis Group is owned by Alessandro Catenacci, whose other Stockholm hospitality ventures includes the Hotel Skeppsholmen and Hotel J. The hotel's 201 guestrooms circulate around two courtyards. A half-storey difference in floor levels between the two buildings was left in place during the transformation from offices to hotel, with half-flights of stairs in-between.
The hotel's public spaces include Italian restaurant Caina, the 24/7 Bistro, The Lounge and the adjacent Gold Bar. The covered courtyard of The Lounge has a 28-metre high ceiling.
In the Seventies, the Nobis Hotel buildings were the site of an attempted bank heist which gave rise to the psychological phenomenon known as 'Stockholm Syndrome.' In 1973 gangsters held four employees from the Kreditbanken hostage in the bank's vault, which is now part of the Acne flagship store at Nobis Hotel. During the six days of their captivity, the hostages gained sympathy for and even loyalty to their captors.
Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel is the latest addition of Radisson Blu hotels in Stockholm. It opened in January 2011 and is the new Flagship Hotel in Stockholm for Radisson Blu. The hotel has 414 rooms and has large conference and banquet facilities at a splendid location with a beautiful water view over Riddarfjärden.
In direct connection with the hotel is Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre, one of the largest meeting and event facilities in the Nordic region. The hotel and congress centre are both managed by Radisson Blu/Rezidor and the buildings has been designed by architects White. The interior design has been created by RPW Design (London) with a phenomenal result. Much emphasise has been on the environmental challenges. The facade acts as 1,000 m2 of solar panelling and generates an average of 1MW of heating energy per day. The warm air that is generated warms water that is then sent to colder parts of the building. During the night, cold water is taken from Lake Klara for the 250 ton ice storage and acts as a cooling unit for the warm areas.
The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel has a concept restaurant called RBG Bar & Grill, a casual venue with a relaxing ambience offering views of the bustling city streets and waterways of Lake Mälaren. The menu features both national and international dishes, and RBG can host up to 230 guests. A Lobby Bar with light snacks and refreshing beverages as well as 24h-roomservice complement the gastronomic program.
Victory Hotel, Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton are all part of the Collector's Hotels and they all represent something totally unique to the Stockholm hotel scene.
Victory Hotel is a welcoming and exclusive hotel with a personal atmosphere in a perfect location in Gamla Stan, Stockholm's charming Old Town. The fact is that the hotel is a tourist attraction in itself. It contains a unique, private collection of marine antiques, passionately selected by the collector himself, the hotel's founder and owner Gunnar Bengtsson.
The Lady Hamilton Hotel is a feminine and romantic hotel in a fantastic location next to the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan. The hotel's charming personality goes hand in hand with the amazing collection of antiques in the Swedish peasant style, which decorates both public areas and hotel rooms. The building that is now the Lady Hamilton Hotel is listed for its cultural significance dates back to the 1470s. The hotel building was originally three separate properties. The current owners, Majlis and Gunnar Bengtsson purchased the property in 1975 and turned it into a hotel. Lady Hamilton's cellar also contains a 15th century well! This entitled the owner to a lower fire insurance premium in the 18th century. The well is now used as a plunge pool in which hotel guests can cool off after taking a sauna.
The Lord Nelson Hotel is an intimate, friendly and pleasant hotel right in the heart of Gamla Stan, Stockholm's Old Town - close to the city centre and all the capital's sights and attractions. The hotel includes a unique, private collection of marine antiques collected through the decades by the owner family Bengtsson.

The result is however stunning and compete with the very best hotels in Stockholm.

The restaurant Aquavit Grill & Raw Bar follows the same success concept as the New York restaurant Aquavit with Marcus Samuelsson in charge. Marcus Samuelsson has dual citizenships, American and Swedish, but was born in Ethiopia and got to Sweden via adoption at early age. Museums
Stockholm has many fantastic museums and if you plan to visit many you should buy the Stockholm Card. With the Stockholm Card in your hand you can choose from 80 museums and attractions. You can also ride a sightseeing boat or ferry, the subway and the bus.
The Vasa Museum is the most popular attraction in Stockholm and attracts over 1 million visitors every year. Located on the island of Djurgården, the museum displays the only almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged, the 64-gun warship Vasa that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628.
The Vasa Museum opened in 1990 after a temporary stay from 1961 to 1988 in a temporary structure called the Vasa Shipyard where she was treated with polyethylene glycol to try save the ship from destruction. After over 300 years under water the oxygen rich air is slowly breaking down the ship and new methods are explored to help slow down this process.
The ship is a fantastic experience to see and a unique story to hear. The design of the ship made it impossible to sail. The ship was a monster warship intended to intimidate the enemy but it didn't even reach out of the Stockholm harbour before the catastrophe happened and it sunk.
The Royal Palace is also a must see. Much of the old palace was destroyed in a fire in 1697 but Nicodemus Tessin the Younger rebuilt the damaged palace, and the work continued for another 63 years. The half-round wings around the outer western courtyard were finished in 1734 and the palace church was finished in the 1740s with the exterior finished in 1754.
The royal family moved to the palace with the southwest, southeast, and northeast wings finished. The northwest wing was finished in 1760. In the north, the Lejonbacken ("Lion's Slope") was rebuilt from 1824 to 1830. The name Lejonbacken comes from the Medici lions-inspired sculptures that stand there.
The palace is guarded by the Högvakten, a royal guard of members of the Swedish Armed Forces, the guard dates back to the early 16th century.
The palace has 1430 rooms, 660 with windows and is one of the largest royal palaces in the world still in use for its original purpose.
Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde is the former home of Prince Eugen and is one of Sweden's most popular art museums. You can visit the prince's reception rooms and see his collection of early 20th Century Nordic art as well as temporary exhibitions. A beautiful flower and sculpture garden surrounds the museum.
The Nobel Museum, Alfred Nobel was the inventor of the safe dynamite among many other things. Swedish industrialist, engineer, and inventor, Alfred Nobel built bridges and buildings in Stockholm. His construction work inspired Nobel to research new methods of blasting rock. In 1860, the inventor first started experimenting with nitro-glycerine.
Nitro-glycerine was first invented by Italian chemist Ascanio Sobrero in 1846. In its natural liquid state, nitro-glycerine is very volatile. Albert Nobel understood this and in 1866 he discovered that mixing nitro-glycerine with silica would turn the liquid into a malleable paste, called dynamite. One advantage of dynamite over nitro-glycerine was that it could be cylinder-shaped for insertion into the drilling holes used for mining.
Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden 1833 but his family moved to St. Petersburg in Russia when he was nine years old. Nobel prided himself on the many countries he lived in during his lifetime and considered himself a world citizen.
When he died in 1896, Alfred Nobel left behind a nine million dollar donation fund. He was at the time one of the richest men in the world and the donation sum is equivalent to about 250 million US dollars in 2011 . The Nobel Prize is awarded yearly to people whose work helps humanity. In total, Alfred Nobel held 355 patents in the fields of electrochemistry, optics, biology, and physiology.
Alfred Nobel never married. In 1876 he put in an advertisement in a Wien magazine where he wrote "A very rich, highly educated, older man living in Paris is looking for woman at suitable age with language skills for employment as secretary and household manager". Countess Bertha Kinsky became Alfred Nobel's secretary. She was one of the leading peace activists at the time and she is assumed to be the major influence in his decision to include a peace prize among those prizes provided in his will. She married Baron Arthur Gundaccar von Suttner and Bertha von Suttner was awarded the 1905 Nobel Peace prize, 'for her sincere peace activities'.
The Nobel Museum illustrates a century of creativity. Follow the changes of the 20th century through the Nobel Prize and the Laureates. Explore the work and the ideas of more than 700 creative minds presented through short films, original artefacts and computers, in the exhibition "Cultures of Creativity." See the dynamite, the mould and the books that changed the world.
The Nobel Prize ceremony is held December 10th every year in Stockholm and is considered to be the most prestigious banquet party in the world.
The Union between Sweden and Norway was dissolved in 1905 and this is why the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held in Oslo.
The Nobel Prize has helped make Sweden internationally known and it is surprising for a lot of people that a small country like Sweden is the venue for such a grand event. The story about the founder of The Nobel Prize, the inventor and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel, is exciting and amazing. Alfred Nobel, the inventor of the safe dynamite among many other inventions, made a very large fortune during his lifetime.
At the time of his death he made it clear in his will that his entire fortune was to be invested in a fund with safe securities and, he wrote, "the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind". The fund has been growing considerable during the years and the Nobel Prize is considered as one of the most prestigious acknowledgements in the world; not only for the prize money itself, being considerable, but for the careful nomination and selection of prize winners.
Many prize winners have also experienced the amazing effect the prize has had on their personal and professional life. They talk about "a life before and after The Nobel Prize".
The Nobel Prize was first awarded in 1901 and a Nobel museum has been created to celebrate the occasion and to honour the prize winners as well as its founder is located in the heart of the Old Town, "Gamla Stan".
If you can't find time to visit the museum in real life you can try The Nobel e-Museum; a virtual museum of science and culture on the Internet.
According to the rules of the Nobel Foundation, the interest of the funds of Alfred Nobel can only be used for the Nobel Prizes. All other activities, such as symposia, exhibitions and museums must be funded by external grants.
The Nobel Prize award ceremony is held at The Stockholm Concert Hall and The Nobel Prizes have been presented to their winners at this location on since the late 1920s. The Banquet is held later on the night at the City Hall of Stockholm and an invitation to this event is much sought after, but only some 1 700 people are invited each year. It was not always like this. The first Nobel dinners were actually served at the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm and only 150 guests were invited.

The Thiel Gallery exhibits a unique collection of Nordic late 19th and early 20th century art.
The museum originates as the private residence and art gallery of the banker and collector Ernest Thiel (1859-1947) who acquired art by his contemporaries among Scandinavian artists, such as Bruno Liljefors, Eugène Jansson and Edvard Munch.
Thiel's art collecting began in earnest in 1901, when he bought art for the then considerable sum of 19,000 crowns at the exhibition of the Konstnärsförbundet artist group. The following year he bought 19 paintings by Bruno Liljefors. In 1904 Thiel commissioned the architect Ferdinand Boberg to build him a large villa at Blockhusudden in the Djurgården park area of Stockholm.
Prince Eugen, the painter and collector, had at the same time architect Boberg to design a combined residence and art gallery at Waldemarsudde in another part of Djurgårdenand this may have influenced Thiel. The Prince originally work against Thiel's plans and forced him to move his new house to a spot farther away from Waldemarsudde than he had first wanted, but in 1906, Eugen gave Thiel a painting of his, Nattmolnet (The Night Cloud) and this was a sign that he had accepted his position in the art life of Sweden.
By 1922, Thiel had lost his fortune, and the gallery was acquired by the state in 1924 and opened to the public in 1926.
The Riddarholmen Church is Stockholm's only remaining medieval abbey, built in the late 1200s. The church is the last resting place of the Swedish monarchs and aristocracy, including Gustav II Adolf, Karl XII, Gustav V and their consorts.
It is one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm and part of the building is dating to the late 13th century, when it was built as a greyfriars monastery. After the Protestant Reformation, the monastery was closed and the building transformed into a Protestant church. A spire designed by Willem Boy was added during the reign of John II, but it was destroyed by a strike of lightning on July 28, 1835 after which it was replaced with the present cast iron spire.
Gustav III's Pavilion is one of the best examples of late 18th century Swedish Gustavian style architecture and is located in the beautiful Hagaparken park surroundings.
The Pavilion was built as a home for King Gustav III and was built in 1787 by the architect Olof Tempelman with detailed instructions from King Gustav III. He was personally highly involved in the project and produced some basic designs himself, suggesting changes once the work was under way. Theses changes included extending both wings by the span of two windows.
The designer Louis Masreliez who became a trendsetter in the interior design of the period was commissioned for the interiors. The pavilion was just one of many great plans and visions that Gustav III had for the Haga Park. Gustav III made use of the pavilion for a few years before his assassination. It was from the pavilion that Gustav III left for the masquerade ball at the Opera on 16 March 1792 where he was assassinated. After the assassination of Gustav III, Duke Charles used the pavilion as his temporary residence.
Beside the Pavilion lie the "Sultan's Copper Tents", buildings designed to resemble big tents.
